Rosebud Perfume Company Smith's Minted Rose Lip Balm

I was suffering from severe dryness on my lips for the past few weeks. My lips were cracking badly. The SA at Sephora recommended me the Rosebud Perfume Company Smith's Minted Rose Lip Balm, retails at S$14. She was recommending this, and the one by Sisley but the price tag of the Sisley Lip Balm scares me off (I can't bring myself to pay S$90+ on a lip balm) so Smith's it will be.

On the casing it says
Our minted Rose Lip Balm will impart moisture, gloss and freshness to your lips. A formula of G.F. Smith with the "zing" of peppermint and the soothing qualities of rose oils.
This product is not tested on animals.
Contains a blend of Essential Oils (Aromol) and cotton seed oil in a special petrolatum base.

This product have a beautiful metal casing, with a nice minty smell. The mint gives a nice minty feel on application and keeps the lips well moisturized all day long. Within a day, with just 2 applications, my dry granny lips became soft and moist. I'm truly impressed! It works better for me than Khiel's!

A tag pricey at S$14 for a 0.8oz lip balm but I honestly feel it's worth every cents! This is probably going to be my staple now!

Available at Sephora Singapore. (I bought mine from the Ngee Ann City branch).

Common Acne Treatment Mistakes

Acne is frustrating to deal with and worse, there is no actual cure. In our quest for clear skin we have to realize what is truth and what is fiction. With so much out there, it’s important that we get our skin care information from reliable, trusted sources.

TANNING
While the sun’s rays can seem to make an improvement on erupted skin, the long term effects of sun exposure are too risky and dangerous. Acne prescriptions can make skin much more sun sensitive so is necessary to use a high sunscreen to protect delicate skin. Hyperpigmentation (brown or red spots) caused by acne is going to be slower to fade away and may even darken with sun exposure. Sun exposure is not a quick fix or solution to acne and is detrimental to the health of your skin and body.

POPPING PIMPLES

Dirty fingernails on the skin, unsanitary conditions and improper squeezing techniques all can cause further infection, spreading of the acne and permanent scarring. A dermatologist or licensed esthetician should be the only people extracting pimples for you. If you have a pimple that is very swollen and painful, an anti-inflammatory like Advil and a warm compress on the skin can alleviate the discomfort until you can seek professional treatment.

SCRUBBING
Regular exfoliation is necessary to prevent pores from being clogged up with dead skin cells which in turn will prevent pimples from forming although scrubbing on openly erupted skin is a recipe for disaster. Grains in exfoliating products can burst open the small pimples and spread the bacteria around the face. Stimulating oily skin can also cause the oil glands to go into overdrive, not to mention causing further irritation to delicate skin trying to heal. Avoid scrubbing near or on open eruptions on the skin.

OVER WASHING YOUR FACE

Since acne is not a skin disease caused by poor hygiene or “dirty” skin it is not necessary to over cleanse. Gentle daily cleansing will remove excess oil from the skin and not strip the skin of necessary moisture and hydration. Excessive cleansing with high detergent products can stimulate the oil glands, causing more congestion and pimples along with possibly dryness and irritation.

AVOIDING FRIED FOODS AND CHOCOLATE
There is a common myth that fried foods and chocolate cause acne. Extensive studies shows this to be untrue although eating a diet of junk food especially food high in processed sugars, is not good for the body, including the skin. Load up on vitamin-rich fruits and veggies for their antioxidant protection. Practice moderation always with high calorie and high fat foods. Some studies show that diets high in dairy (due to the hormones in dairy products) can trigger acne though nothing is 100 percent proven. Overall healthy diets will improve the body, skin included.

USING VERY HOT WATER TO CLEANSE AND RINSE

Hot water can damage delicate capillaries in the skin causing a red, blotchy look as well as stimulate oil glands into overdrive. Tepid water for a thorough rinsing is always best.

ELIMINATING MOISTURIZER
All skin needs moisture and hydration especially when acne treatments effect the moisture levels in the skin, particularly medications like Retin A and Accutane. Non-oil moisturizers are best for acne prone or acne erupted skin since they will not clog pores. Hydrating gels feel very light and non-greasy on problem skin. A daytime moisturizer with sunscreen is highly recommended to protect from hyperpigmention and the sun’s aging effects.

Chocolate theme park in 2010

This is for you chocoholics out there!
BEIJING - CHINA plans to cater to the country's rising number of chocoholics with the opening next year of a Willy Wonka-style theme park in Beijing, complete with a replica Great Wall, state media said on Thursday.

The 'world chocolate dream park', reminiscent of Roald Dahl's beloved book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, will feature a life-size edible Terracotta Army, Great Wall and versions of famous paintings, the China Daily said.

'Our 'chocolate wonderland' will be beyond the imagination,' Tina Cheng, general manager of the company that will operate the park, was quoted as saying.

The park, due to open in January 2010, will be located in the Olympic Green, which also includes the iconic Bird's Nest stadium and the Water Cube aquatics centre used during the Beijing Summer Games last year.

The site will include five pavilions and two outdoor sites where chocolate-made objects, such as the replica Great Wall, will be on display, the report said.

Chocolate is not as popular in China as it is in Western countries, but the sweet treat is increasingly popular with the nation's younger generation.

Ms Cheng was quoted as saying that a number of prestigious chocolate makers from Europe, including Belgium and Switzerland, wanted to participate in the project, but she would not reveal their names.

'There is the potential for a huge market in China with regards to chocolate consumption,' she said, according to the report.

'That's why many overseas chocolate producers are vying to join our project.' -- AFP

Review - Sivananda Yoga Centre

It's been a few years since I attended formal yoga classes, hence I attempted the beginner trial class at Sivananda Yoga Centre. It's conveniently located, just a few streets from my office, and only 5 minutes walk from Outram MRT if you take the train.

It's located on the third floor of a nice little shop house. What greets you is the long flight of stairs, very typical of shop houses, so you get to do some "exercise" before the actual lesson. :)

Mats are provided, but you can bring your own mat as well. I was a little confused of what to do as there were no instructions so I just grab a mat, and find a spot. Some people were lying down in Sarvasana (corpse pose), some were sitting in lotus pose. I'm clueless what to do, so I just sat there like an idiot. hahahaa..They don't have a official trial class so the class I've attended is the usual beginner class.

The teacher came over to brief me some briefing techniques (like pumping etc.), and started the class with some chanting (in sanskrit maybe?). I kind of like that.

I went through the class feeling like an idiot as most of the time I'm clueless of what's going on and just try to find someone who i can follow. I think that's the cons of classes that allows anyone to pop in and join anytime. Unlike actual classes where there's actual "modules" and poses to be taught each lesson, since everyone's pace is more or less the same, everyone in the class here are of different "levels". some are really beginners (know nuts) and some have already attended a few classes and know what's going on. I'm lucky that I've attended classes before so I can still roughly follow the class even though I feel like an idiot.

Personally, I feel that the beginner class here is not really suitable for real beginners (those that have never learnt yoga before). My previous class was organized by Singapore Sports Council. It's an actual class and the instructor taught us step by step of everything we are doing. From basic pranic breathing technique, specific instructions on how to do each pose, what are the benefits, what are the things we need to take note, which people are not suitable to do the pose etc etc. We learnt in details and taught how to do each pose properly.

During the trial class, there was minimal instructions, and I feel that for real beginners, they will probably have a very hard time catching up, and may result in injury since they may not know the proper steps and breathing. Also, when doing poses like shoulder stand, there was no "anouncements" that those having menses should avoid this pose. I remembered during my class at SSC, the instructor will always annouce and remind us who can and cannot do this pose. For real beginners, I doubt they will know they need to avoid?

In general, the class is ideal for those with basic understanding of Yoga and wish to attend classes to keep fit. For real newbies, I'll think you may want to consider other centres, or take up a trial class before signning for actual classes to see if the pace is good for you. :)

DIY Mask - Oatmeal Mask

I'm very into DIY mask lately and this is one of my current favourites. Cheap, and really really good. End results is clean, smooth and radiant skin. Try it, you'll love it.

Main Ingredients:
Oatmeal (I'm using Quakers. It's S$2.95 for 1 big tin which can last you rather long)
Honey (you can use normal honey or manuka honey. I feel manuka honey gives better results though, but it's expensive, so it's up to you)

Optional (from time to time, I add some of the following. Need not add all. It's up to you)
Yogurt
Pearl Powder
Lemon Juice (for whitening)

Direction
  1. Add 1 tablespoon oatmeal into a bowl. If you find it's too coarse, you can grind it to powder format. This also makes it easier to apply.
  2. Add 3-5 tablespoon of water
  3. If you're adding Pearl Powder, add it in now
  4. Mix well and put it into the microwave. Slow cook, 2 mins.
  5. Take out mixture, add in 1/2 tablespoon honey and mix well.
  6. Let it cool abit and apply to clean face
  7. Leave it on for 15-25 mins, or when mask is dry.
  8. Wash off mask

I've found a video that shows the steps.

The Secret to Michelle Obama's Sculpted arms

WASHINGTON - AT LAST, the secret to first lady Michelle Obama's sculpted arms? Tricep pushdowns and hammer curls.

So says Cornell McClellan, Mrs Obama's longtime personal trainer, who described the workout routine of his famous client in the October issue of Women's Health magazine. She began working with McClellan in 1997 at his Chicago fitness studio.
'She's truly committed herself to the importance of health and fitness,' he says.

Mr McClellan said that at the end of an intense routine of cardio workouts and weight training, Mrs Obama finishes with the 'arm-shaping superset' of tricep pushdowns and hammer curls to tone one of the most commented-upon pair of arms in the world. Mrs Obama often wears sleeveless outfits.

How to get arms like Mrs Obama's? Perform one set of tricep pushdowns using a straight bar attached to the high pulley of a cable station and then, without resting, follow with a set of hammer curls using dumbbells. Immediately repeat the entire process until two or three sets of both exercises have been completed.

The details of Mrs Obama's fitness routine came as part of a series of interviews by President Barack Obama and Mrs Obama on health care and their personal fitness and nutrition habits.

Mr Obama was interviewed by Men's Health; he also was featured in the magazine last November. Mrs Obama gave her first interviews to Women's Health and Children's Health, a new magazine by Rodale Inc, publisher of the men's and women's health magazines.

Mr Obama is again on the cover of Men's Health, while his wife graces the cover of Children's Health. She is joined by some of the Bancroft Elementary School pupils who have been involved with the White House garden.

Mr Obama said he works out six days a week: two cardio days and four weightlifting days split between the upper and lower body. He also discussed his effort to overhaul the US health care system and his late mother's bout with cancer.

'My blood pressure is pretty low, and I tend to be a healthy eater,' he said in the interview. 'So I probably could get away with cutting (my workouts) back a little bit. The main reason I do it is just to clear my head and relieve me of stress.' -- AP

Beauty-Insideout

99% of the women population's goal is to achieve beauty, whether they want to admit it or not.
Beauty, should always involve your inner and outer beings.

Inner. When you feel in peace, happy, you sleep better, breathe better, stay healthier, and naturally, you will glow from within. I always find the glow from within the most beautiful, and most difficult to achieve. No amount of concealers and makeup and achieve this look.

Have you notice the glow on mothers, mothers-to-be and brides? Do you remember the saying that says you glow when you're in love? The glow, the beauty, from within, is the most undescribable thing. Sometimes, you look at this girl, and you went speechless. You've no idea what's that THING that makes her so special. She's not exceptionally pretty, she may not have the best features, figure nor hair. But there's just something about her that makes her unexceptionally remarkable. This is the glow, the beauty from within.

Of course, in today's society, packaging is important. Packaging, branding plays a big part in our everyday lives. So in our bid to achieve inner beauty, we should take care of our external beauty as well.

Here is where I document my journey and research, to achieve the ultimate beauty. from inside and out. Please, share with us, your findings and experiences as well.

As the old saying goes, "There's no ugly woman. Only lazy ones".

Chanel Announces Concept Store at Marina Bay Sands

French luxury house Chanel announced in August 2009 that will open what they call a unique concept boutique at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore’s soon-to-be completed palace of entertainment.

The 7,600 sqf (706 sqm) boutique will be spread over two levels at the Marina Bay Sands Shoppes and will showcase Chanel’s ready-to-wear lines, accessories, fragrances and beauty products. Like the Chanel boutique in Ngee Ann City, this one will be designed by longtime Chanel collaborator Peter Marino.

“Chanel is very excited to be part of the Marina Bay Sands concept. It is a great opportunity to join the ultimate house of luxury with a truly innovative and creative retail environment. Singapore has a young progressive and energetic retail scene,” said President of Chanel Asia Pacific Vincent Shaw.

Shaw’s comments were echoed by David Sylvester, Vice President Retail Asia, Las Vegas Sands Corp: “ Marina Bay Sands’ Vision for Singapore has always been to create a spectacular retail experience so we are delighted and honored that Chanel has chosen Marina Bay Sand Shoppes for such an exciting store.”

Marina Bay Sands is scheduled to be completed in 2010.

The Font War: Ikea Fans Fume over Verdana

Thumbing through his local Swedish newspaper, Göteborg resident Mattias Akerberg found himself troubled by a full-page advertisement for Ikea. It wasn't that the Grevbäck bookcases looked any less sturdy, or that the Bibbi Snur duvet covers were any less colorful, or even that the names given to each of the company's 9,500 products were any less whimsical. No, what bothered Akerberg was the typeface. "I thought that something had gone terribly wrong, but when I Twittered about it, people at their ad agency told me that this was actually the new Ikea font," he recalls. "I could hardly believe it was true."

Over its 60 years, Ikea has built a reputation as a purveyor of inexpensive but stylish home furnishings, selling everything from leather sofas to chrome toilet-bowl cleaners. Branding has been a large part of the Swedish chain's success — what urban dweller today, whether in Atlanta or Kuala Lumpur, doesn't recognize that bright blue warehouse, glowing like a beacon of fine living, at the side of the highway? And its signature typeface, a customized version of Futura, has long been an integral part of that brand. But with its 2010 catalogue now arriving in mailboxes, the supplier of headboards and coffee tables to the world's thrifty and trendy has switched to what it sees as a more functional typeface: Verdana. In the process, it has provoked an instantaneous global backlash, the kind that can only happen on the Internet.(Read about Ikea in TIME's Design 100.)

"Ikea, stop the Verdana madness!" pleaded Tokyo's Oliver Reichenstein on Twitter. "Words can't describe my disgust," spat Ben Cristensen of Melbourne. "Horrific," lamented Christian Hughes in Dublin. The online forum Typophile closed its first post on the subject with the words, "It's a sad day." On Aug. 26, Romanian design consultant Marius Ursache started an online petition to get Ikea to change its mind. That night, Verdana was already a trending topic on Twitter, drawing more tweets than even Ted Kennedy.(See TIME's Ted Kennedy coverage.)

IKEA's 2009 online catalogue uses the old typeface.

IKEA's 2010 online catalogue features the Verdana font.

All this outrage over a font? For some designers, it's an issue of propriety — Verdana, which was invented by Microsoft, was intended to be used on a screen, not on paper. "It has open, wide letterforms with lots of space between characters to aid legibility at small sizes on screen," explains Simon l'Anson, creative director at Made by Many, a London-based digital-consulting company. "It doesn't exhibit any elegance or visual rhythm when set at large sizes. It's like taking the family sedan off-road. It will sort of work, but ultimately gets bogged down."(See pictures of Microsoft.)

Carolyn Fraser, a letterpress printer in Melbourne, Australia, adopts a different metaphor to explain the problem. "Verdana was designed for the limitations of the Web — it's dumbed down and overused. It's a bit like using Lego to build a skyscraper, when steel is clearly a superior choice."

Others seem mystified by the choice to eliminate one of the chain's key identifying features. "The former typeface definitely better reflected Ikea's design philosophy, giving it a very special, unique flavor that actually fit the company's style," says Vitaly Friedman, editor in chief of the online Smashing Magazine, which is dedicated to Web design. "With Verdana being used all across the Web, Ikea's image not only loses originality, but also credibility and the reputation that the company has built since the 1940s."

The main complaint that online protesters have, though, is that the newly adopted font is plain ugly. Especially when it's enlarged to, say, the size of a catalogue headline. Or worse yet, a billboard.

So why would Ikea make such a change? The very ubiquity of Verdana seems to be part of the font's appeal. Freely distributed by Microsoft, the typeface allows Ikea to use the same font in all countries and with many alphabets. "It's more efficient and cost-effective," says Ikea spokeswoman Monika Gocic. "Plus, it's a simple, modern-looking typeface."(Read "The Store That Runs on a Wrench.")

"They went cheap, in other words," counters Bucharest designer Iancu Barbarasa, who blogged about the font change on his website. If he sounds somewhat bitter, there's a reason. With its attention to the curve of even a $9 lampshade, Ikea has become renowned for its understanding of good design. "Designers have always thought of Ikea as one of their own," Barbarasa notes. "So now, in a way, the design community feels betrayed."

Indeed, the desire to remind people — and corporations — that design matters is what spurred design consultant Ursache to start a petition asking Ikea to do away with the offensive Verdana typeface. "Look, I know this isn't world hunger," he says. "But if a company like Ikea can make this mistake, you have to wonder who is going to lead when it comes to design."(Read "Furniture for Everyone.")

Ikea has yet to respond publicly to the tempest. "I think it's safe to say we were surprised by the response," admits spokeswoman Gocic. As of Aug. 27,Ursache's petition had garnered over 700 signatures. That may not seem like a lot, but then there weren't many protests at first to a certain beverage company's announcement in April 1985 that it would be changing its flagship product. Just three months later, however, New Coke was gone. And that was before Twitter.

OMG...now Pigs have H1N1 too!

H1N1 detected in live pigs imported into Singapore
By S Ramesh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 03 September 2009 1617 hrs

SINGAPORE: The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has detected the pandemic A(H1N1) virus in some pigs imported into Singapore from Indonesia's Pulau Bulan.

But the AVA stressed that the pork available here is safe for consumption, as the H1N1 virus is not transmitted through the handling and consumption of pork and pork products including ham, bacon, sausages and canned pork.

AVA added it will step up its monitoring and inspection to ensure food safety, like increasing the number of daily pork samples taken for tests from 30 to 100.

It will also take part in a comprehensive disease surveillance programme on the Pulau Bulan farm, led by the Indonesian authorities. The aim is to identify and isolate affected pig houses.

AVA's director-general, Dr Chew Siang Thai, said: "AVA is now working closely with the Indonesian authorities and the farm management to ensure that clinically healthy pigs are exported to Singapore.

"And these pigs, when they are in the abattoir, are also subjected to a series of inspections that ensure that safe pork get released into the market."

Restricted animal movement will also be imposed to ensure only healthy pigs are exported to Singapore. The AVA said this is in line with the World Organization for Animal Health's recommendation.

Meanwhile, steps have also been taken to make sure that everyone is safe.

Dr Chew said: "The workers have already been putting on protective gear, masks and have been practising good hygiene procedures to avoid getting any potential infection."

Suppliers have been informed of the steps being taken so that they too can play their part by enhancing measures and ensuring everybody complies with the requirements.

AVA said that Singapore has adequate sources of pork supplies from 25 countries.

Singapore's import of 1,000 pigs daily from Pulau Bulan constitutes some 20 per cent of the total pork consumed here.

Ripples Flip Flop Sale @ Tanjong Pagar Plaza

I'm a flip flop fan cos it's so comfortable! I always keep at least a pair of flip flops in the office to trot around the office in. It gives my feet a good break from heels!

Over lunch earlier, my colleagues and I found this tiny shop (near the famous Muffin stall at Tanjong Pagar Plaza. It's behind NTUC), that is converted to a temporary Ripples store.

The most amazing thing is prices starts at S$3 and the most expensive one is S$5! and you get a pair free (from the $3 range) when you spend more than $20. Awesome bargain rite? My colleagues and I totally went crazy buying. They have limited sizes for certain designs though.

I don't have the exact address here, but it's at Tanjong Pagar Plaza (opposite Amara Hotel). One of the shops at the back (along the stretch where the Muffins are), behind NTUC. They close at 6pm.

Most of the designs can be found in the shop except those in the $20s range.
