*sings* To the left, to the left
The catchy song by Beyonce, Irreplaceable.
On the roads, if you are slow, you move to the left (well, I'm not sure about the rules in other countries, but in Singapore, the left lane is for slower vehicles).
This simple logic applies everywhere.
On the escalator, you stand on the left, so that people who are in a hurry can move up from the right lane.
I don't understand why this simple logic is so hard to understand.
People simply loves standing right in the centre, or stand side by side with the lovers/friends/whatever as if they simply can't separate for 10 seconds, or some will stand on the left (good job!), some stand on the right, hence, makes it impossible for people who are in a hurry to move up the escalator faster.
This is especially fustrating during peak hours in the CBD where almost everyone is rushing for time.
There's always some irritating people, who loves to block the way.
As I always love to say "blocking the world from moving".
You look at them, they return with a nasty stare of "why you look at me!", or a"why-is-eveyone-looking-at-me" look.
You try to signal to them to let you move up, they won't move.
Well, to give credits to the better few, some people actually turns apologetic and quickly moved to one side. I'm talking about those who simply refused to bug, and think they are not in the wrong.
The authority should really think of more campaigns and measures to educate the public to keep "to the left, to the left".
So for everyone who takes the escalator everyday, here's a gentle reminder:
1. If you're standing still on an escalator, always keep to the left (this applies for singapore. I don't know about the rules in your country)
2. Do not hog the escalator (i.e. the whole group of friends standing side by side and blocking the whole escalator, preventing people from moving up, or even if you are a single person, do not stand in the centre)
It's nothing complicated. Simple, good manners makes the world a more pleasant place. :)
With that, here's Beyonce's Irreplacable.
